I'm online ready to begin any thoughts on the feedback from Alison.

  1. Hi. I thought Alison's feedback made sense. because how do we know what people think of Essex and Geordie accents? Do you think doing a questionnaire to find out people's views would be a good idea? Or maybe just having a simpler question?

  2. I think doing a questionnaire is good idea, how could we simplify the question? I think sociolect may be a good area to explore as it would tie in well with what we have been doing in the LAVC seminars with Ruth???
We could maybe have words and get people to show which area they expect them to belong to??
This may also help when comparing how they are portrayed in the media with the sociolects as it would be interesting to see if the words may fit the media stereotypes???
These are just ideas shoot me down if you don't think they are any good!!

  3. No, I agree that the quesionnaire would be good :) Just listened to Alison's audio message again and near the end she did suggest an alternnative question could be something like: 'In what ways do the accents on the TV shows differ from each other? or something like that lol. So I guess comparing them phonologically.

She also said about determining people's 'expectations' about the accents and i think the questionaire would be a good way of doing that, esp. with the word expectation thing you suggested.

Think the question could work if we got people's attitudes from the questionaire. Think we would also have to look in newpapers, etc to find out about the media sterotypes.

I don't mind really, just depends whether everyone is prepared to design and collect data using the questionnaire, as well as doing the transcriptions, etc. :)

  4. Yeah I definitely agree with the questionnaire idea. I think the question would make sense as long as we had evidence to support the cultural and social attitudes about the regions, and I think we could achieve this by doing a questionnaire. Obviously then if there aren't any cultural or social attitudes about the region then we should change the question.

  5. Hi Bronwyn. Yeah I agree. Maybe we could do a mini questionnaire which we could each give out to 3 people and then see from that if there were any cultural/social attitudes? If there were, we could then ask more people what they think.

  7. Yeah, i liked the sound of it too. Maybe, if we don't get much of a response from the questionnaires, that could be our back up question?

Just thinking, do you think we'll have enough time to do the questionnaires, then the transcriptions, then presenting everything? Our next 'milestone' is due in by the end of Week 7 - we have to update the blog with what we've done so far and what we still need to do. Then we present in Week 11. What do you think?

  8. Maybe we could do a piolot questionnaire before reading week and uses that to refine our questions and check it gives us the data we are looking for and could then create a full questionnaire to distribute when we are back from reading week?? XXX

  9. Yeah good idea. So what kind of questions and/or words do you think we could include?
